What’s the overlap between VODO and VRM?

I just learned about VODO.net. Here’s the short version, and here’s the long version of what VODO is about.

The very short version: “VODO’s aim is to provide a revenue stream for creators of media content”.

The strategy section of the long version says this:

VODO connects would-be donors to creators in order that they can make donations through existing payment mechanisms. In the current environment it is often hard for consumers to make this connection for themselves. While some producers do request and offer infrastructure for voluntary payments, these almost always have to be made at a specific website, in a manner that may be inconvenient for the consumer. VODO’s benefits lie in distributing payments out to players and downloading software, making it as trivial as possible for donors to initiate voluntary donations when they feel most ‘connected’ to the artist: at the point of enjoyment of the media.

Seems to me that VRM is a superset of this. But I’m brand new to VODO. Anybody else have some thoughts about it?

    I suspect people have used such terminology as ‘compulsory donation’ or ‘obligatory donation’, but that would seem an abuse of the word ‘donation’.

    I used to think even ‘payment’ meant a voluntary exchange of money.

    Anyway, if we do now need a word that means a voluntary, voluntary, voluntary exchange of money, I guess VoDo makes sense. :-}

    Their idea appears to be about identifying published works in order to enable people to reward the producers of those works specifically for the publication of those works.

    E.g. “Here’s $1 to whoever wrote/sang/recorded that song published N years ago, because I really enjoy it”

    In case it’s vaguely relevant, I happen to be working on a mechanism that VoDo says they don’t yet have. http://www.contingencymarket.com enables people to exchange money for public acts or events, e.g. the publication of a specific song.

    It’s up to the punter to decide whether they pay for something because it was published, or because they want it to be published.

    There are all manner of bargains that can be made between the public and publishers – once people stop believing in the sanctity of copyright and all such bargains as the sole preserve of those so privileged.
